In 2018, before the world went sideways, we were fortunate to be commissioned to help rejuvenate a historic property know as De Mond in the sea-side town of Hermanus.
The property consisted of a double garage with a cottage above, a guest cottage and two linked historic thatched barns. The existing buildings were to provide for the homeowner's modern lifestyle, while maintaining the charm and historic Cape Dutch character of the original. 2020 saw some milestones for our office with our practice's 30th anniversary in April and Wynand's 60th birthday in August. Unfortunately we did not get to celebrate these events in the style that they deserved. But we did manage to have a virtual gathering together for our 30th and, when the lockdown permitted, we got to have a piece of cake for Wynand's birthday.
In 2006 we were asked to design and build a new home for a young family, after we had renovated the client's family home on a local golf course some years before. The site turned out to be one of the most challenging that we have ever built on, but it resulted in one of the most rewarding homes for us to build for our clients. Clinging to the slope of Lions Head, the site had an existing house which was in a very poor state and badly constructed. Our initial intention was to try to renovate this house but, after the professional engineer made close inspection of the existing structure, the best call was to rebuild.
